Just recently, I heard from the news about the next Filipino saint after our first saint Lorenzo Ruiz of Manila. He was the very first Filipino saint in the our blood line after he became a member of the knight of the altar (Sacristan) during the 17th century, He was accused by the Spaniards of killing one of their fellow, a reason for him to escaped and continue his catholic service to japan. But after the long search of the Spanish people, they found Ruiz at nagazaki japan, and there he was persecuted and killed as a martyr of the Roman catholic Church.
But this time, Filipinos are now waiting for the canonization of the next saint in our time after Pope Benedict XVI approved the petition send by the Diocese of Cebu who believes that PEDRO CALUNGSOD should be considered as a saint for his good deeds and martyrdom for his Catholic faith. Calungsod was also a sacristan during his time, He served the people of Guam especially the Island of Marianas, where he celebrated several masses and Baptism for the people of the Island. But when one of his critics, who was a Chinese man who said that calungsod is trying to mislead the people of the Island by teaching them a false faith, he was persecuted and also killed as martyr of his time. Late Pope John Paul II approved the beatification of Calungsod last 2000. According to Arch. Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, Calunsod may be proclaimed as saint this coming February.
Well, we should believe that in spite of our ranks as one of most corrupt countries in the world, or as one of the most dangerous country worldwide, there still goodness in every Filipino heart no matter what happen. St. Lorenzo Ruiz and St. Pedro Calungsod (soon to be), they are the proof that we can be as good as other Saint and Holy people of other countries in the world. We should be hopeful that, in spite of the darkness side of our country, we can still strive for Bright future of our country. Perhaps, the two saints were the saints of their generation, but we have to accept the fact, that they are indeed filipino, in blood and at heart, the same blood that runs in our veins.
